If you’re anything like me, you want to do it all. There never seems to be enough hours in the day to accomplish everything that needs to get done; so you inevitably scale back on commitments that once excited you. Burn out isn’t uncommon. The state of chronic stress that is often branded by feelings of exhaustion and lack of control frequents more women in their 20’s and 30’s today than ever before.
Messages about getting into the best schools and excelling in every area of life (grades, friendships, family and more) are often highlighted at a very young age. For women, success is parallel to their professional achievement and family stability.
Thus, according to a study by professor Scott Reinardy, women are more likely to experience higher levels of role overload. So, what do we do about it?
Below are three signs that can tell you if you’re on the verge of burning out and a few things you can do to overcome it.
Exhaustion
Feeling tired emotionally, mentally, and physically all the time is a classic sign of burn out. Not having the energy to perform the tasks you used to accomplish well can result in bigger problems down the line (i.e. interpersonal problems, lack in job performance, etc.).
Tip: Try carving out time for relaxation, away from the stress of work is important to maintain overall health and well-being. Step away from your desk to take a breather, or text a friend to help you unwind. Yoga or meditation practices have been proven to calm and relieve stress. Additionally, try keeping soothing aromatherapy lotions or sprays at your desk for instant relaxation.
Lack of Motivation
When you become unenthusiastic about the things that once made you happy or have a lack of interest your daily activities, there could be a chance that you’re suffering from burn out.
Tip: It’s important that when you feel like this to try and find a hobby or passion (outside of work) to participate and truly engage yourself in. Discovering what truly brings you joy and peace outside of your every day job function can revitalize your life.
Negative Emotions
While it’s normal to second guess yourself or feel a bit pessimistic from time to time, it is important to be aware of your overall mental health and notice if these negative emotions are taking control of your life.
Tip: Evaluate your overall happiness and see if these negative feelings can be made positive again. Focus on your thoughts and feeling and unplug from the rest of the world. Set some time for you to be away from social media, emailing and any technology that doesn’t contribute to your mental well-being.
