Let’s face it: many of us dread the daunting task of cleaning out our closet. It’s on our to-do list, yet somehow we never get to it. Whether you’re trying to abide by New Year’s resolutions, get a jump on spring cleaning, or be productive on a rainy Saturday afternoon, cleaning out your closet won’t just help you feel organized, it can benefit others too. Instead of throwing away your cast-offs, donate them to people in need. Here are a few recommendations of charities that accept donations of used clothing in the U.S., along with my favorite places in NYC.
Donate Old Clothes In the U.S.
Dress for Success
This wonderful organization empowers women to achieve economic success by providing a network of support, professional attire, and development tools to help women thrive in work and life. Donate your gently used work attire, shoes, and handbags to a local affiliate.
Society of St. Vincent de Paul
This charitable organization has been providing to people in need for more than 100 years. With chapters throughout the U.S. and worldwide, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul allows you to schedule a pick-up of clothing and other household items.
Goodwill
Working to enhance the dignity and quality of life of individuals and families by strengthening communities, Goodwill operates throughout the U.S. They accept donations via donation bins and centers where you can drop off gently used clothing.
Local Mission or Homeless Shelter
Most shelters are independently run, so if you are looking to donate to your local mission you will have to consult Google to find the nearest one in your area. Most shelters will accept clothing, bedding, non-perishable food, and toiletries.
Donate In NYC
United War Veterans Council
I have donated to the UWVC many times. Schedule a pick-up for almost anything including clothes, furniture, household items, and office supplies.
Pick Purple
In an effort to reduce waste, Pick Purple accepts clothing, shoes, linen, and accessories.
The Bowery Mission
The Bowery Mission has been helping the homeless and hungry since 1879. You can drop off your donations Monday–Saturday, 7:00 A.M.–7:00 P.M. at 227 Bowery St., New York, NY 10002.
Career Gear
Helping men get back on their feet, Career Gear accepts donations once a month at their Financial District office. My husband and I have personally donated many old suits, shirts, and ties to this organization.
New York Cares
This wonderful charity operates an annual coat drive to keep the needy warm during New York’s cold winter seasons. They also provide a complete list of charities that accept clothing donations here.
Now you have no excuse to clean out your closet! Go light your organizational fire and simultaneously help people in need. Win-win!
Stay fabulous,
