I have battled my skin for most of my life. From cystic acne to blackheads and fine bumps, #thestruggleisreal. After years of dermatologist visits and countless prescriptions, I realized that my over-the-counter skin care routine was lacking. So, I started investing in my skin and thoughtfully considering what I put on it. Lately I’ve been using these five treatment options, and they have been helping to clear my acne-prone skin and keep it looking its best. If you struggle with skin issues, here are a few options you may want to consider:
Microdermabrasion
Dr. Brandt Skincare Microdermabrasion Age Defying Exfoliator
Exfoliation is essential for acne-prone skin. Microdermabrasion uses crystals to polish the skin, removing a thin layer of it in the process. It benefits people with dull skin, mild acne, acne discoloration and marks, and very superficial acne scars. If you are prone to blackheads or need help fading your hyperpigmentation, I highly recommend this product. I’ve been using it since February and am happy with the results. However, it is not recommended for those who suffer from severe acne, as this treatment can actually spread bacteria around your face.
Spot Treatment
Derma E Very Clear® Acne Spot Treatment 2%
When you break out, eliminating blemishes is your #1 priority. Using a product that has salicylic acid is an excellent treatment option. You can’t sporadically use products with salicylic acid in your skin care regime, as salicylic acid is useful only if applied continually, even after acne has cleared. In the absence of salicylic acid’s exfoliating and cleansing effects, your pores can clog again, resulting in a return of acne. I apply this every time I see a bump and use it well after the bump is gone.
Mud Mask
Glam Glow SUPERMUD® CLEARING TREATMENT
Mud masks are a wonderful way to clean your pores—an essential step when clearing acne-prone skin—by absorbing oils and removing bacteria from your face. This particular mask goes one step further to help target acne. Its blend of six acids (glycolic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, mandelic acid, pyruvic acid, and tartaric acid) help to minimize pores and clear skin. Plus, the Activated-X charcoal lifts away dirt and other skin congestions, resulting in a refined, healthy-looking complexion. It is definitely my go-to treatment!
Skin Brightening Serum
SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense
Acne sufferers like me often experience dark marks from old acne scars. These stubborn spots can make your complexion look dull and uneven. I just started using this Discoloration Defense serum from SkinCeuticals, and I’ve already noticed results. My marks are beginning to fade, and my skin tone is evening out. Note: It is recommended to use this product morning and night. During the day, you must follow with SPF 50 for skin protection.
Cleansing Mask
Clear skin starts with clean skin. Of course you need to remove your makeup every night and use a cleanser, but once or twice a week apply a deep cleansing mask to help remove any built-up dirt. The Detox Mask from MALIN + GOETZ is my favorite because it cleans and soothes my skin simultaneously. It is oxygenated to lift dirt, and the soy protein and Vitamins C and E help to prevent aging.
