While scrolling through Instagram I saw a photo of what seemed to be endless rows of lampposts, and instantly I knew this would be the coolest backdrop for a shoot. I think I was right! This iconic installation is a permanent fixture at the entrance of LACMA, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and it’s one of the many attractions to see on the widespread grounds surrounding it. For such a striking art display, I decided to make my own statement in the form of fashion.
At first glance, LA can appear to be one sprawling city of boring strip malls, tree-lined neighborhoods, and traffic filled freeways. But after spending some time here, I have been pleasantly surprised by the beautiful architecture in my midst. What is formally called Museum Row, the area of Wilshire Boulevard between Fairfax and La Brea, is home to four major Los Angeles museums: L.A. County Museum of Art, La Brea Tar Pits, Craft and Folk Art Museum, and Petersen’s Auto Museum. This part of the city has some very unusual and unique structures that are well worth a visit.
I have a great appreciation for most forms, but like many New Yorkers, fashion is the best form of art! Since summer is here, I am sporting one of my favorite warm weather colors, hot pink. Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)
LACMA is truly a multi-day destination, given the size and scope of its collection. From Chris Burden’s iconic entrance installation Urban Light, a piece made up of 202 cast-iron street lamps gathered from around LA, to the Pavilion for Japanese Art, a day at LACMA can span hundreds of years and thousands of miles.
Huntington Library, Art Collections & Botanical Gardens
The bequest of entrepreneur Henry E. Huntington is now one of the most enjoyable attractions in the Los Angeles region. It’s also not a destination that you should attempt to explore in full during a single day.
The NHM’s original Beaux Arts structure was the first museum building in LA, opening in 1913 with Exposition Park itself. The new Otis Booth Pavilion welcomes visitors into the museum with a six-story glass entrance featuring a stunning, 63-foot-long fin whale skeleton.
LA’s newest contemporary art museum, the Broad, the public home for Eli and Edythe Broad’s collection of 2,000 post-war works. You’ll find familiar pieces from the likes of Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons, as well as spectacular installations like Yayoi Kusama’s “Infinity Mirrored Room.” Outside, the museum’s plaza features a lovely olive tree grove that sits in from of Otium, the museum’s signature restaurant from French Laundry alum Timothy Hollingsworth.
LA’s hilltop acropolis was conceived as a home for the contents of the J. Paul Getty Trust, but that’s the only straightforward thing about it. The 13-year-long, $1 billion project opened in 1997. It’s remarkable complex of travertine and white metal-clad pavilions that resemble a monastic retreat with panorama views James Bond would dig.
