Stopping Traffic: How to Rock a Killer Dress with Style

Holt Orange Bondage Dress | Stopping Traffic: How to Rock a Killer Dress

Every once in a while you find a killer dress that you just know will turn heads. Beyoncé referred to it as a “Freakum Dress,” because the moment you put it on you instantly feel sexier and more confident. Styling a show-stopping dress is an art, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. With fall right around the corner and the temperatures starting to cool down, now is the perfect time to rock a hot look that is sure to stop traffic.

How to Style

The key to styling a killer dress is simple: less is more. A striking dress will make a powerful impression on its own; don’t force it to compete with your makeup, accessories, and shoes. Keep your ensemble simple and let the dress do all the talking. This deliberate approach to style helps your accessories to complement each other while keeping you from looking overdone. In my showstopper dress, for example, I pulled back my hair to focus attention on the dress and kept my makeup neutral with gold metallic accents on my lids and lips.

How To Accessorize

While in NYC, I stopped by The Shoe Box to style this look that will turn heads from here to Hollywood. Chic and understated Stuart Weitzmann Nudist sandals paired perfectly with this Holt Miami stunner. I may have mentioned this before, but I can’t overstate my love for Stuart Weitzmann. His shoes and boots are a little pricey compared to other contemporary brands ($295–795), but they are comfortable and made so well. This shoe is perfect for any day or evening event, comes in a variety of colors, and is now available in a lower heel. I paired this look with a Gigi New York clutch, which I have featured in a couple of posts in the past, and—voila!—I was ready for a night on the town.

Rules to Follow

Wondering how you, too, can pull off a look that stops traffic? I’ve got some tips for you:

  1. Fit is everything! A dress that is too small or too big will look tacky or sloppy. Either find your size or have your dress tailored.
  2. Find a color that pops on your skin. It doesn’t matter what the hottest color of the season is if it doesn’t look right on you. Shop for colors that complement your skin tone.
  3. Simple accessories are a must. Sometimes more is more; however, this is not one of those times. Find a handbag, shoes, and jewelry that coordinate without overwhelming your look.
  4. Work it! An outfit always looks better on a confident woman, so wear that dress and don’t let it wear you!
